Pope Congratulates Ifad For Its 30th Anniversary

2009-04-02

IFAD officials were welcomed to the Vatican for the celebration, and left with the Pope’s assurance of his commitment to fighting world hunger.

Benedict XVI
As you know, the Holy See fully shares your commitment to overcome poverty and hunger, and to come to the aid of the world’s poorest peoples. I pray that IFAD’s anniversary celebration will provide you with an incentive to pursue these worthy goals with renewed energy and determination in the years ahead.

IFAD is a specialized agency of the United Nations whose mission revolves around providing aid to poor countries around the world in efforts to overcome hunger.

For 30 years the organization has been working with governments to jump start agriculture in developing countries. Their aim is to help poor countries build a reliable agriculture system so as to become independent of outside aid.

Benedict XVI is aware of the difficult economy and its effects on world food supplies.

Benedict XVI
Your work is particularly crucial at the present time in view of the damaging effect on food security of the current instability in the prices of agricultural products. This requires new and far-sighted strategies for the fight against rural poverty and the promotion of rural development.

Though IFAD and others are at the forefront of the fight against world hunger, the Holy See recognizes the severity of the strain that the economic crisis has placed on food supplies.
