The pope denounces the "moral blindness of this indifference”: "under the guise of what is politically correct or ideologically fashionable, one looks at those who suffer without touching them. But they are televised live; they are talked about in euphemisms and with apparent tolerance, but nothing is done systematically to heal the social wounds or to confront the structures that leave so many brothers and sisters by the wayside”.

The government of the Order of Malta will elect the successor of the Grand Master in April

Pope names a Special Envoy for Medjugorje

According< g> the Vatican, "the mission has the aim of acquiring a deeper knowledge of the pastoral situation there and above all, of the needs of the faithful who go there in pilgrimage, and on the basis of this, to suggest possible pastoral initiatives for the future”.

The two days of closed-door discussions between Jewish and Catholic experts finished on Monday afternoon, at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem.

Father Roberto Spataro, a Salesian historian who took part in the workshop, offered a positive assessment at the end of the meeting.

THE OBJECTIVES HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED. IN THE FIRST PLACE, THE COOPERATION OF HISTORIANS OF DIFFERENT OPINION.

At the opening remarks, the chairman of Yad Vashem, Avner Shalev, spoke about the need for this update, since the documentation is so abundant.

At least, a dozen books have been published in the last six, seven years, and hundreds of articles on this issue. Some of them are serious, well documented, others, not so serious.

Archbishop Antonio Franco, Nuncio to the Holy Land, welcomed the initiative and offered Yad Vashem the full collaboration of the Catholic world, since they share the same values.

For the Shoah, for the memory, to keep the memory, and to learn from the memory, the Catholic Church, I think, is the best partner, the best ally, of Yad Vashem.


Even though the topic, was not on the agenda, this meeting constitutes the first step Yad Vashem has taken in two years, when it agreed to reconsider the caption of Pope Pius XII which many Catholics find offensive.

Now that the meeting has ended, Yad Vashem is looking forward to Benedict XVI’s visit.  He will not enter the museum itself, but will visit the memorial, as John Paul II did.  For its part, the Catholic Church hopes to continue with the beatification of Pius XII without offending the Jews.
