The pope denounces the "moral blindness of this indifference”: "under the guise of what is politically correct or ideologically fashionable, one looks at those who suffer without touching them. But they are televised live; they are talked about in euphemisms and with apparent tolerance, but nothing is done systematically to heal the social wounds or to confront the structures that leave so many brothers and sisters by the wayside”.

Pope Benedict praises John Paul II four years after his death

2009-04-08

Benedict XVI
“Four years ago, on this day, my beloved Predecessor, the Servant of God John Paul II ended his earthly pilgrimage, after a period of great suffering. We celebrate the Holy Eucharist in memory of his soul, and we thank the Lord for having given him to the Church, for many years.”

Before thousands of pilgrims, Pope Benedict reflected on how his predecessor touched the lives of many all over the world, and remembered his strong unwavering faith.

Benedict XVI
“Our thoughts turn to the Servant of God Karol Wojtyla John Paul II, who from an early age proved to be a bold and fearless defender of Christ. He never hesitated to spend any energy to spread the light everywhere, never compromised when it came to proclaim and defend his faith, never tired of spreading his love.”

The large number of pilgrims that visit John Paul II’s tomb, said the Pope, is a sign that he continues to be alive in the hearts of Catholics all around the world.
