World Youth Cross turns 25

2009-04-22

Benedict XVI
Dear friends, I give you this cross once more. Continue to take it to every corner of the world so that generations after yours can discover the mercy of God, and find in their hearts the hope given to us by Christ crucified and resurrected.

After the audience, youth from the San Lorenzo Center in Rome walked the cross in a procession.

Antonio
The cross can bring hope to those places plagued with pain, and give them the strength to carry on towards the future. So that they can become grounded in Christian doctrine.

Matthew
The cross brings a couple of messages: one, is an example of love, also of suffering. It’s an example that we all have to suffer. Even the Lord, God, who had all the power, suffered for us and this is a great, wonderful example for us today.

Luz
It’s not just something we wear around our neck or decorate our houses with. It signifies the true presence of the Lord inside us. Especially his presence within our youth, who are our future.

The cross, along with the icon of the Virgin Mary, passed through Rome’s historic center in procession. It is set to travel to Poland and finally stop in Spain to be present for World Youth Day 2011.
