'.fam': internet domain for families

2009-08-25

Institutions and companies rely on domain extensions like .gov or .com to put their information on the web. These three letter extensions allow users to quickly identify what type of website they are accessing. But there isn’t a domain extension available for families.

Jorge Baixauli Fons
Director, Corporative development .fam
“We hope this particular domain is identified in any part of the world as an international support to the family community.”

The .fam association was born in 2002, with the goal of offering families a place on the internet. A place where their rights can be respected, their presence in society promoted, and where families can be recognized as a point of reference on the web.

According to the association, .fam will help facilitate relations between family members and social entities. It can also be used as a communication tool between families and society.

It’s an idea that continues to get more and more attention. The association is awaiting approval frmo ICANN, the corporation that assigns names and numbers online, so that .fam can be created as an official domain.
