The pope denounces the "moral blindness of this indifference”: "under the guise of what is politically correct or ideologically fashionable, one looks at those who suffer without touching them. But they are televised live; they are talked about in euphemisms and with apparent tolerance, but nothing is done systematically to heal the social wounds or to confront the structures that leave so many brothers and sisters by the wayside”.

“We ask for him to be with us always, we are working in catostrophe striken areas like L´Aquila. During aftermath of the earthquake, he helped us a great deal. We have felt him nereby.”

Emergency service volunteer
“To give us a hand at times of need, especially when we are serving those who rely on us, because our strength is the best thing he can provide us.”

Emergency service volunteer
“We beg for protection while we are working as volunteers for services that are meant to protect citizens.”

Emergency services requested Father Pio to become their patron saint in light of his generosity, specifically towards people who suffer the most. Their wish became reality on March 29th 2004.

Better known as Padre Pio, Francesco was born on May 25th 1887. At the age of 23 he was ordained a priest, and 8 years later he experienced stigmata. Father Pio hands exhibited  what appeared to be the same markings Jesus suffered from the nails on the cross.

Under an order from his superiors, the Italian saint spent a decade of his life in exile to avoid any misunderstanding among the faithful. During this period in his life, he listened and spiritually healed those who reached out to him.

Seventy years after he died he continues to be an example for those who volunteer and look to save lives during difficult situations and catastrophes.
