Pope John Paul II made history in 1986 when he visited the synagogue of Rome.
Pope Benedict has visited synagogues in the past.
In 2005 he visited the synagogue in Cologne Germany and in 2008 he visited one in New York City.
But this will be his first visit to the Rome congregation.
His planned visit is no surprise, earlier this year he expressed his interest in a telegram to the Chief Rabbi of Rome.
The visit is scheduled for January 17th.
