The month of April also saw the celebration of Holy Week. On Palm Sunday, young Spaniards received the World Youth Day Cross from young Australians. Since then, the cross has travelled through Spain in preparation for Madrid 2011.
“This handover assumes a highly symbolic value which we use to express our eternal gratitude to God for the gifts we received during our great meeting in Sydney and for those gifts we will pass on in Madrid.”
In the middle of Holy Week, Italy woke up to a deadly earthquake that left 271 people dead. The pope promised to travel to the affected area as soon as possible and sent his personal secretary to greet the families of the victims and to participate in a mass funeral.
