The city of Vancouver Canada plays host to the 21st Winter Olympic Games and the X Paralympic Winter Games from February 12 – 28th.

In a letter to the Archbishop of Vancouver, Benedict XVI recalled the words of John Paul II, saying how sports can make an effective contribution to peaceful understanding between peoples and to establishing the new civilization of love.

The pope also thanked organizers and community volunteers who are taking part in the international event.
