What you don’t know about the popes film library

Author “La Filmoteca Vaticana”

“I have worked in T.V with material on the popes biographies and the history of the Church for many years. So I have bridged these two aspects of my life to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vatican’s Film Library.”

The popes film library holds some 7,800 movies including titles such as “Schindler’s list”, “Shrek” and “Nosferatu”. Many times the library has been the place where the Pope meets with artists.

“After watching ‘Life is Beautiful’ the director Roberto Benigni visited the pope. But he realized he didn’t bring a gift for the pope so he took out a small book on St. Teresa of Lisieux he had in his pocked. The pope was so excited by the directors spontaneity.”

Aside from these anecdotes and memories, the book includes interviews with those who have promoted and protected the library. Like Cardinal John Foley, Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, the president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications and Claudia Di Giovanni, the person in charge of the film library today.

The book marks a special way to celebrate the Vatican Film Library’s golden anniversary.
