Rome discovers its most hidden places

2010-05-29

We’re talking about underground tours that’ll take place for only two weeks. They’ll take visitors to places normally off limits to the public. Places very few know about and that have shaped history. This is the ground Cesar walked on and the ground that witnessed the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.

Take these 117 steps for example. These steps lead to the Virgin Aqueduct, which allows visitors to see the channels that deliver water to the most significant fountains in the Eternal City, such as the Trevi Foutain, The Foutain of the Old Boat near the Spanish Steps and the Fountain of the Four Rivers at Piazza Navona.

This structure dates back to the year 19 B.C but it’s been restored several times.

8 meters below the city, is the structure where Minthras, was worshipped. Minthra’s was a God connected to a religion that spraed throughout the Roman Empire during the first and fourth centuries. Because the religion shares some Christain elements, it’s believe many early Christians derived from that cult.

Between Christianity and Mithraism there are big coincidences. Both religions believe in judgment, the resurrection of the dead and life after death.”

The Via Latina catacombs can also be visited throughout the two weeks. The Valeri family tomb was constructed in the 2nd century of Christ.

Francesca Montella
Cultual Heritage Rome
"What stands out about this tomb is its decoration. The top is made of white plaster with Dionysian images and fantastic animals.”

Incredible details that are just a taste of Rome’s hidden secret treasures, unveiled through a once in a life time opportunity.
