This appointment is a crucial step in the enthronement process of the principal representative of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Schevchuk was elected by the 45 members of the Synod of Bishops of the Catholic Church of Ukraine, which is the largest eastern catholic church with about four million followers.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is widespread in Ukraine, North and South America and Australia.
