Templeton Foundation gives religious award to secular astrophysicist Martin Rees


According to organizers in charge of handing out the award, the research of Rees has “helped to address the fundamental problems of our nature and existence.”

Among his other accomplishments, Martin Rees has also been president of the British Royal Society.

Past winners of the award include Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Chiara Lubich, founder of the Focolare Movement and the Spanish biologist Francisco José Ayala.

In addition to international recognition, the distinction also carries an award of 1.6 million dollars.
