He explained HolyThursday is when oils are blessed for baptism,confirmation, and the ordinationof priests as well asanointing the sick and commemoratingthe institution of the Eucharist.
“Theliturgies of these days invite us to ponder the loving obedience ofChrist who, having become like us in all things but sin, resistedtemptation and freely surrendered himself to the Father’s will.”
Thepope recalled the suffering of Jesus in the Garden of Olives, whereheassumedall the suffering of humanity and transformedthe will of God.
He explained that the Apostles fell asleepand that this dream is a symbol of the callousness of the human soulto God. The Pope said the Holy Thursday night worship is a good timeto reflect on this dream or indifference to God.
“Onthe evening of Holy Thursday, the Mass of the Lord’s Supper beginsthe actual Triduum and recalls the institution of the sacraments ofthe Eucharist and Holy Orders.”
Healso noted that on Good Friday the Gospelsare read onthe Passion to commemoratethe Deathof Jesus. Andduring Holy Saturday theEaster Vigil is celebrated. Thisis the mainnight forthe remembrance of Jesus conquering death through his Resurrection.
“TheEaster Vigil joyfully proclaims Christ’s resurrection from the deadand the new life received in Baptism. By our prayers and our sharingin these liturgies, let us resolve to imitate Christ’s lovingobedience to the Father’s saving plan, which is the source ofauthentic freedom and the path of eternal life.”
