“I ask the international community to seriously address the extreme poverty of these areas where living conditions are deteriorating. I also want to encourage and support different Church entities that are working in this field.”
Over the years, the area has suffered serious droughts and poverty. Since May of 1980, the foundation has tried to improve the living conditions of locals.
“Born almost thirty years, and desired by my Blessed predecessor, “The John Paul II Foundation for the Sahel” continues to pursue this goal: to be a sign of Christian charity, that embodies and becomes a witness of Christ. The Foundation also strives to show the closeness the Pope has with our African brothers who live in the Sahel.”
During the meeting, the members of this institution gave the Pope a unique map of Africa. As Pope, Benedict XVI has visited the continent twice.
