Pope sends condolences for victims of Turkish cargo jet crash

January 16, 2017. On Monday morning, a Turkish cargo plane has tragically crashed in Kyrgyzstan, killing dozens and hospitalizing many others. Many homes and vehicles in the small village are also destroyed. As a result, Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin has sent a message of condolences to the victims of the disaster on behalf of Pope Francis.

“If people incline their heart toward God and ask for his help, they will receive the strength to carry out their work. For this reason, human freedom and the power of God go together.”

Benedict XVI also spoke about the figure of the Peruvian saint Martín de Porres, who was canonized by Pope John XXIII fifty years ago  on May 6, 1962.

“Today we remember also the fiftieth anniversary of the canonization of St. Martín de Porres, who we ask to intercede for the work of the New Evangelization, which kindles holiness in the Church.”

Next Sunday is May 13, the feast day of Our Lady of Fatima. To celebrate, Benedict XVI will pray the Regina Coeli in the Italian city of Arezzo, where he will make a pastoral visit.
