Pope Francis will travel to Egypt from 28 to 29 April 2017

March 18, 2017. In response to the invitation from the President of the Republic, the Bishops of the Catholic Church, His Holiness Pope Tawadros II and the Grand Imam of the Mosque of Al Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed el-Tayyib, Pope Francis will make an Apostolic trip to the Arab Republic of Egypt from 28 to 29 April 2017, visiting the city of Cairo. The programme of the trip will be published shortly.

Pope to meet with most powerful European leaders on March 24

March 3, 2017. On March 24 a historic meeting will take place between the pope and many of the most powerful heads of government throughout Europe. The meeting was announced by the Director of the Press Office of the Holy See, Greg Burke and will begin at 6 p.m. in the Sala Regia of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican.

"This is an image of the Arab Spring. As you know, the Arab Spring was one of the highlights of last year and according to the jury this was the moment or the picture that encapsulated the Arab Spring the best of the pictures.”

Among the entries, were photos from the Japanese earthquake last March, showing a devastated coastline after the tsunami struck.

The awards given out by the World Press Photo are considered to be some of the most prestigious in photojournalism.

"It's considered to be what they say the Oscars of photo journalistic community.”

This photo was taken by Italian photographer, Simona Ghizzoni who has been profiling women's issues throughout North Africa and the Middle East. The woman seen here was wounded during a missile attack and now has problems using her legs. The image took third place in the category of contemporary issues.

"This photo was taken in the Gaza Strip almost one year ago in April of 2011. And it's part of a project about the consequences of war on women's everyday life.”

These photos were taken by Emiliano Larizza, who was awarded second place in the category of arts. The images are of a waterfall in Haiti where locals gather each year in pilgrimage to wash themselves in the purifying waters.

"It's a place where the Haitians would go to make a pilgrimage. It's a very important place, the most important of the country. And every 16th of July the different societies there mix together, poor, rich, all of them go there to pray.”

This exhibition in Rome is just one of the many that take place throughout the globe by World Press Photo. This is the 55th annual contest which brought together over 5,000 photographers from 124 countries.
