During their visit, there was also an exchanging of gifts between Monti and the pope as well as with the Vatican's Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone. 

Since taking office last November, Monti has introduced sweeping reforms aimed at controlling the Italian debt crisis. He will be meeting with Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Francois Hollande in the coming week to discuss the Euro debt crisis.
