"For me the most memorable  moment was when I saw him in Israel. He visited homes to talk to families. He was a very human, quiet and good. He had the great gift of kindness and word, which allowed him to convey something not everyone can.”

She also remembers how Cardinal Martini would meet with children who were separated by the conflict between Israel and Palestine. His message to them, was one of hope.

"I invited him to speak at a conference, where he said that one can't win wars or conflicts by doing evil acts. You win with kindness, and selfless giving. Give and you shall receive, but don't think on what will be given to you.”

The last time Fanfani met with Cardinal Martini,  was a year ago. She says even though he already suffered from Parkinson's disease, he didn't really like to talk about it, since he didn't want to worry those around him.
