From Colombia to Turkey. Key orchestra welcomes young musicians

2012-09-06

JULIAN LOMBANA
Via dei Concerti, Director
"'Via dei Concerti' was born and inspired by the so called silk route. It creates a union and  communication between people through personal contact'.  'The Via dei Concerti' was created to bring about social integration through music to kids around the world. It's  open to youths in the world who believe in the future and want to make music a vehicle of transformation.”

Among the young members more than half of them are from Colombia. They're part of the Batuta Orchestra, which had the opportunity to play for Benedict XVI while in Rome.

CÉSAR MAURICIO VELÁSQUEZ
Colombia's Ambassador to the Vatican
"It's a unique orchestra that along with the help of people and institutions, welcomes young people so they can develop their musical talents. It's also a way to fight against violence, by keeping kids away from drug traffickers, paramilitaries and guerrillas. Many of these young people here, have that hope, since once you embrace a musical instrument, you will never embrace a weapon.”

The young musicians from Colombia- by far outnumber the others, but there's something else that makes their visit even more special.

CÉSAR MAURICIO VELÁSQUEZ
Colombia's Ambassador to the Vatican
"It is a moment of great joy that the concert is taking place here at the Immaculate Conception of Via Veneto, because in this church , Colombia's first ambassador before the Holy See is buried.  Thanks to the Capuchins,  in a way it's a Colombian parish that honors our country. So really it's a perfect way to start off this concert.”

JULIAN LOMBANA
Via dei Concerti, Director
"This concert has a special meaning, which includes a homage to Colombia's embassy before the Holy See, it's a tribute to our diplomacy and our ties."

This cultural festival has already performed in 14 Italian cities. The next stop is France and Spain, where without a doubt, these talented youths will hear much deserved applause.
