Pope Francis: No people is criminal and no religion is terrorist

February 17, 2017. Pope Francis has sent an important message to the Meetings of Popular Movements that is taking place in Modesto (California). The pope denounces the "moral blindness of this indifference”: "under the guise of what is politically correct or ideologically fashionable, one looks at those who suffer without touching them. But they are televised live; they are talked about in euphemisms and with apparent tolerance, but nothing is done systematically to heal the social wounds or to confront the structures that leave so many brothers and sisters by the wayside”.

Brazilian ambassador expects at least 2 million youth in Rio de Janeiro for WYD

Ambassador of Brazil to the Vatican
"This is hard to say because sometimes you exaggerate. But I would say that we are expecting at least two million people in Rio for this big event.”

The high estimates for the last World Youth Day in Madrid were also around two million. But Ambassador Barbuda expects a larger crowd due to the amount of Brazilian Catholics.

Many of them still remember the visits by John Paul II. He visited Brazil a total of four times during his pontificate. While he was there, he made a joke about a Brazilian saying that God was from Brazil.

ALMIR FRANCO DE SÁ BARBUDA
Ambassador of Brazil to the Vatican
"He said 'if God is really Brazilian, the pope is Carioca' and Carioca are people who are born in Rio.”

World Youth Day in 2013 will be Benedict XVI's second trip to Brazil, his first was in 2007. He made stops at the sanctuary of Aparecida and the city of São Paulo. However, next year will be his first visit to the city of Rio.

ALMIR FRANCO DE SÁ BARBUDA
Ambassador of Brazil to the Vatican
"I do hope that the Pope will enjoy Rio as much as Pope John Paul II enjoyed.”

Groups of young people, along with the pope, are making travel plans next year so they can be part of World Youth Day between July 23rd and the 28th. It will be the 14th international gathering of Catholic youth and is expected to be one of the biggest so far.
