Vatican's police department denies it mistreated Pope's butler

The butler said the light was always left on in his cell, but the police department says it was the butler himself who asked for it to be left on, since  it kept him company. The department says the light was on to prevent him from injuring himself. Furthermore, they say he refused a sleeping eye mask.

The gendarmerie also says, the butler had daily lunch with several officers he already knew. He refused to play sports in the gym of the Vatican police, and had a daily hour to be outdoors. They also add his family had unlimited visitation rights.
