February 17, 2017. Pope Francis has sent an important message to the Meetings of Popular Movements that is taking place in Modesto (California). The pope denounces the "moral blindness of this indifference”: "under the guise of what is politically correct or ideologically fashionable, one looks at those who suffer without touching them. But they are televised live; they are talked about in euphemisms and with apparent tolerance, but nothing is done systematically to heal the social wounds or to confront the structures that leave so many brothers and sisters by the wayside”.

"The presentation of these documents coincides with the 100th anniversary of his birth. It also coincides with the Synod of bishops. This is truly exceptional because John Paul I is really a model for all bishops of the Church.”

For someone to be declared a saint, they must first be declared a Servant of God, then Venerable. Thirdly a Blessed and then, with the approval of the Pope, a saint. John Paul I was elected on August 26th 1978, but he died 33 days later. As far as a time line for his possible canonization, his postulator says there isn't one.

"Cardinal Angelo Amato responded this way: We do not set the time, but what we can do, is use this time as a period of grace. A time dedicated to prayer, so we can communicate the life of the person we are promoting to the altars.”

Among the documentation presented to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, is material on a potential miracle, attributed to the intercession of John Paul I. It's the case of a Italian man who was inexplicably cured of stomach cancer.
