Pope sends condolences for victims of Turkish cargo jet crash

January 16, 2017. On Monday morning, a Turkish cargo plane has tragically crashed in Kyrgyzstan, killing dozens and hospitalizing many others. Many homes and vehicles in the small village are also destroyed. As a result, Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin has sent a message of condolences to the victims of the disaster on behalf of Pope Francis.

"Today's message of Jesus is the same, that spiritual encounter with Him is also the same. The liveliness of the Church and of a community is the same. FLASH: 00 05 43 "But we can't do it alone or even together. It's God who gets it done.”

As the New Evangelization moves forward, he says Catholics can't underestimate the value of the family and the Christian formation of children from early on. He says that powerful cycle begins in the family and in one's local parish.

"All of us who have leadership roles in the Church, so bishops, religious and the laity, we all need to have a proper formation. And for that to happen, we first need to have quality catechesis.”

When it comes to secularization in the U.S. he says the threat of religious liberty is quite real. He argues it's not the role of society to tell the laity when and where they can and can't exercise their faith.

Archbishop Garcia Siller visited Rome to take part in the Synod on the New Evangelization. During this three week meeting, hundreds of bishops from all over the world exchange ideas on how to best communicate to the modern world.
