2012-10-30

In his statement, the Pope describes migration as a right, but he also says every individual has the right of not having to leave their country to survive.

CARD. ANTONIO MARÍA VEGLIÒ
President, Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care of Migrants

"No one leaves their country or their family with joy, they do so with great pain. Can anyone leave their family behind to go find a job and not suffer in the process? That's why we highlight that one also has the right to stay at home and not migrate. But sometimes the harsh reality gives people no other choice.”

In his message, the Pope tells refugees to have hope. He also invites them to put their trust in God.  When it comes to international community, he reminds people that humanitarian assistance should go hand in hand with spiritual care.

The Pope emphasized that immigrants contribute to society, but massive migrations can also give way to other dangers. That's why in his message, the Pope calls for efficient measures to eradicate human trafficking, especially that of women and children.
