The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church has about 450,000 members, mainly in the southern Indian state of Kerala, and is in full communion with the Church in Rome. For Thottunkal, his creation as cardinal has a special value to India.

Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal was born in 1959 in Kerala state. He was ordained a priest at 27 and received a doctorate in Ecumenical Theology. The cardinal is very active in Indian society, helping those less fortunate. He has built two hospitals for patients with AIDS, a homeless shelter, and an education foundation to help needy children.
