Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal was born in 1959 in Kerala state. He was ordained a priest at 27 and received a doctorate in Ecumenical Theology. The cardinal is very active in Indian society, helping those less fortunate. He has built two hospitals for patients with AIDS, a homeless shelter, and an education foundation to help needy children.
