Benedict XVI ordains his personal secretary and three other Curia members as bishops

2013-01-07

During the ceremony, Benedict XVI cited the Three Wise Men as examples to the bishops of the search for truth, in spite of taunting that followed them.

BENEDICT XVI
"But for these men, inwardly seized by God, the way which He pointed out was more important than what other people thought. For them, seeking the truth meant more than the taunts of the world, so apparently clever."

In addition to his personal secretary, the Pope ordained the two nuncios Fortunatus Nwanchukwu and Nicolas Thevenin, who will represent the Pope in Nicaragua and Guatemala, respectively. The fourth person is Vincenzo Zani, the number two person at the Congregation for Catholic Education. Benedict XVI reminded them of the primary role of the bishops within the Catholic Church.

BENEDICT XVI
"The approval of the prevailing wisdom, however, is not the criterion to which we submit. Our criterion is the Lord himself. If we defend his cause, we will constantly gain others to the way of the Gospel."

The ceremony was full of highlights, among them, when the Pope gave each new bishop a hug with the greeting of peace, as well as the imposition of hands by the Pope and cardinals and bishops present at the ceremony.

The key figure throughout was the Pope's personal secreatary. His new coat of arms shows his closeness and loyalty to Benedict XVI. The left half depicts the Pope's coat of arms, while the right side features a dragon, symbol of loyalty, with a blue background a Star of Bethlehem, representative of the Virgin Mary.
