But they are televised live; they are talked about in euphemisms and with apparent tolerance, but nothing is done systematically to heal the social wounds or to confront the structures that leave so many brothers and sisters by the wayside”.

The Pope also greeted the participants in the Synod of the Chaldean Church, a mini conclave celebrated in Rome to choose their new patriarch. Several of the interactions with the bishops were very emotional.

After the traditional family photo, the Pope gave the new patriarch a golden cross and a rosary as a gift, to help him in his mission. Afterward, the bishops of the Chaldean Catholic Church sang for the Pope.

Following their gathering with Benedict XVI, the prelates met with the Vatican's Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who gave them as a gift a silver relief of the Virgin Mary with the apostles.
