Emotion fills St. Peter's Square: Benedict XVI flies overhead as he leaves Vatican

2013-03-01

"I was on the square. I saw the helicopter  flying over  the city and I thought, 'he is not coming back,' and then came on that side and in that moment all the people were in the square applauding, cheering and many people cried.”

"We felt really sad because our Pope is leaving the Vatican. And we feel something kind of sad because, you know, staying with the Pope, we feel spiritually present. But, you know, when you believe in something, you, we feel something, really we cannot express it.”

"Yes I  saw. It was little but it  in the sky, and I felt so sad. The sense is that our father  is going away, it's like children, and we are abandoned. But we really appreciate the humility to even leave  his high position.”

All the people gathered at the square witnessed a historical occassion, but also became part of it themselves as they narrated the day Benedict XVI boarded his helicopter and left behind the top post at the Vatican.
