"This morning, we had 142 cardinals out of a total of 207. 142 present, and 65 missing. Out of the electors, 103 were here, and we're still missing others who are expected to arrive tonight or tomorrow morning. There are still about 12 missing.”

One of the first things done was the draw for the three cardinal assistants to the Camerlengo to oversee the Holy See in the next three days. This task will fall upon Cardinals Re, Sepe and Rodé. They also agreed to draft a message for the Benedict XVI. During the last part of the session, several of the cardinals spoke out to help set the schedule for the next few days.

"Thirteen cardinals spoke briefly but intensely. It was brief because in 45 minutes, 13 spoke, but intense, because as the cardinal dean had asked, they spoke about the organization for the next few days, about how they will to coordinate the topics, and the calendar for the next few days.”

Still, no date was chosen to start the conclave. The cardinals met once again in the evening for the first of two meditations required by law. The meditation was led by the preacher of the Pontifical Household, Father Raniero Cantalamessa.
