Rector of Buenos Aires cathedral predicted Bergoglio's election

He recalls his words to then Cardinal Bergoglio on the day he left Buenos Aires for Rome.

Rector, Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral (Argentina)
"The Cardinal was leaving at 11 and I said this: 'Your eminence, when you hear Bergoglio 74, Bergoglio 75, Bergoglio 76, Bergoglio 77, and you hear the applause, think about me,' I told him.”

Just past 3PM on March 13, local time in Argentina, Russo was giving phone interviews when white smoke appeared at the Vatican.

Without a television to follow the events, he became very excited and was left speechless. He says he knew what that white smoke meant...

His confirmation came a few minutes later, from 7 thousand miles away...

"Giorgium Marium... Bergoglio”

Rector, Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral (Argentina)
"I ran out, searching, with an impressive emotional upheaval. I practically felt like the Oracle at Delphi, that had chosen the right person.”

The election of Bergoglio as Pope Francis left his hometown temporarily without their main shepherd. But Russo is convinced it's for the good of the Church.

Rector, Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral (Argentina)
"The archdiocese said goodbye to their dear father because he has become an even greater father for the Church, and the city said goodbye to her son. His pontificate will be marked by displays of that father figure from the Holy Father.”

Though he left them behind, Pope Francis is not forgetting about his flock back home. Soon after his election, he told the archdiocese he would be sending them his cardinal's ring to keep it as a way to thank the people of Buenos Aires.
