February 17, 2017. Pope Francis has sent an important message to the Meetings of Popular Movements that is taking place in Modesto (California). The pope denounces the "moral blindness of this indifference”: "under the guise of what is politically correct or ideologically fashionable, one looks at those who suffer without touching them. But they are televised live; they are talked about in euphemisms and with apparent tolerance, but nothing is done systematically to heal the social wounds or to confront the structures that leave so many brothers and sisters by the wayside”.

Meet Alfred Xuereb, Pope Francis' Personal Secretary

2013-04-04

So in addition to all the day to day issues, Xuereb also accompanied Benedict XVI in his apostolic trips abroad. Since he was second in line, when the German Pope resigned, Xuereb automatically became Pope Francis' secretary during this transition phase.  He's been part of the Papal Household since the year 2000 and back in 2003, he was given the title of 'Honorary Prelate' by John Paul II.  Interestingly, the 54 year old has worked with three popes.

Even though he was born in Malta, Xuereb has been in Rome for many years now. He was ordained a priest in 1984. Five years later he finished his Doctorate in Theology at the Pontifical Theological Faculty Teresianum. Xuereb has also worked at the Lateran University in Rome where he served as the rector's secretary. He also worked at the Vatican's Secretariat of State.
