ANTONIO PAOLUCCI

Director, Vatican Museums
"Precisely it was this Pope, Paul III, Farnese, who wanted this place for papal court parties, to host important people in Italy and Europe. So this garden was always for the exclusive use of the pontifical court.”

Jacopo Meleghino was the architect who was given the assignment. He designed this court reserved for special guests of the pontifical court. It is also just a few hundred feet from the famous Vatican gardens.

ANTONIO PAOLUCCI
Director, Vatican Museums
"I find this garden to be very beautiful because if you go inside, where I am now, you will understand everything. You understand that you're at the center of pure beauty, because there's the beauty of nature, the sky over Rome, the forest that cover the Vatican hills. On one side you have the dome of St. Peters', on the other side, the Vatican gallery. Inside are the masterpieces of Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, all these things are here within this magic circle.”

Now, centuries after its construction, this space, that witnessed the interactions of all the great figures form the 16th Century, is now open to the public, so that those who visit the Vatican Museums can also appreciate this architectural and cultural masterpiece.
