Pope on mafia: Let us pray that they may be converted

2013-05-27

POPE FRANCIS
"My thoughts are with the sorrows of men and women, even children, who are exploited by the many mafias, who make them do a job that makes them slaves, like prostitution, with so many social pressures. Let us pray to the Lord to convert their hearts; let us pray to the Lord that these men and women of the mafia be converted."

His comments were in reference to a priest and martyr, Father Giuseppe Puglisi who was beatified over the weekend, 20 years after being killed by the so called 'Cosa Nostra' mafia in Italy.

The Pope also reflected on the feast day of the Holy Trinity. He explained that the Holy Spirit is not a vague concept, but something clear and direct.

POPE FRANCIS
"The light of Easter and Pentecost renew every year in us the joy and wonder of faith that recognizes that God is not something vague, or abstract, but has a name: 'God is love'. It is not a sentimental, emotional love, but the love of the Father who is at the origin of every life, the love of the Son who died on the cross and rose again, the love of the Spirit that renews man and the world.”

A group of Chinese pilgrims was also present during the Pope's Angelus. May 24th, marks the day when all Catholics are invited to pray for the Church in China, where religious freedom isn't always respected. The Pope thanked this group for its visit and he also prayed to Our Lady, so that she may protect all Christians.
