"We've been described as an ascetic community. We're very much caught up in pursuing God, as beauty and goodness and truth.”

It all started with an album titled 'Advent at Ephesus'. They all personally worked on everything from the graphics, artwork and photography. In addition they also sing all of the tracks a cappella.

The cd did extremely well. It was the Billboard's top classical album for six weeks and the nuns were named the 'number one classical traditional artists of 201'.

In May, the chart-topping Benedictines of Mary released their second album, titled 'Angels and Saints at Ephesus'. It is a tribute to various saintly figures, such as Our Lady, St. Joseph and St. Francis Xavier, and it's also expected to do extremely well.

"With this new CD, which is called 'Angels and Saints at Ephesus', people will find an album similar in many ways to 'Advent at Ephesus'.  It's all of us singing together, again a cappella, no instruments accompanying us.”

The album is produced by award-winning producer Christopher Alder, who says, at first, he never imagined he was listening to nuns singing.

CHRISTOPHER ALDER
Grammy Award winning producer
"First of all I was surprised how well they sang. I was already convinced at least the quality of their singing was high, so I would also enjoy myself musically. It had never occurred to me there might be Benedictine nuns in the middle of the United States!”

The Benedictines insist they are not professionals, but they do practice at least three hours a day. Singing, they say, is their favorite form of prayer.
