Odoardo Focherini: Journalist who saved more than 100 Jews to be recognized as a Blessed

2013-06-11

FRANCESCO MANICARDI
Grandson of Odoardo Focherini
"Olga, his eldest daughter, was thirteen when her father was killed. She remembers him as a loving father who always wanted to play with his kids. He was also an affectionate husband who knew how to share with his wife both Christian values, with their work in the 'Azione Cattolica' and civil values, when he had a chance to save persecuted Jews.”

At work, Focherini always spoke against discrimination. He worked for 'L'Avvenire d'Italia', a daily newspaper which still runs to this day. Its current editor believes Focherini, the first journalist to ever be beatified, can teach modern journalists a very valuable lesson.

MARCO TARQUINIO
Editor, 'Avvenire'
"Just as Odoardo Focherini had special consideration for the Jews, who were persecuted at the time, we too must have eyes that focus on those who are normally left out of the spotlight. We must focus on those who are considered not 'news-worthy', as they say”.

After his death, Focherini received wide praise. He was included in the list of 'Righteous Among the Nations' by the Holocaust official memorial Yad Vashem.

FR. GIOVANGIUSEPPE CALIFANO
Postulator of the cause for beatification
"Odoardo Focherini left us his pure, ardent and luminous faith. His last words, as recalled by those who witnessed his death, tell us that he was aware that he offered his life for the Church, the Pope, faith and his own family, the ones he loved.”

Odoardo Focherini will be declared a blessed on June 15th, in his hometown of Carpi, in Northern Italy.
