GRAZIOLI PORFIRIO
President, Città dei Ragazzi
"He found a two year-old child sitting in front of the parish. The boy was waiting for his parents to wake up. He had just seen them die in front of his very eyes. The priest, in his dusty cassock, saw the child and thought: who is going to take care of him?”

Since then Msgr. Carroll-Abbing, left his post at the Vatican's Secretariat of State and began to take care of homeless and orphaned children. He fed them and assisted the wounded, so that they could  get their childhood back.

This is how the 'Città dei Ragazzi' was born on October 6, 1953. It's a group governed and managed by the children themselves. It had its own currency to reward merits, and its own workshops to learn a trade or study.

"We were completely self-governed. The boys ruled alone in full freedom and autonomy. Later in life, this was useful for me in educating my own children. "

Roberto is the child smiling, sitting to the left of the group, talking to the priest. He lived in the "Città dei Ragazzi” with his brothers for 5 years, until he was 16, since their mother could not take care of them.

"I never met my real father, so he was like a father figure to me. Somehow, he was a father to thousands. A very charismatic man."

On October 6, the 'Città dei Ragazzi' will celebrate its 60th anniversary. This photographic exhibition will travel across Italy and the United States, to remember the work of Msgr. Carroll-Abbing. During his life, the priest received praise from Paul VI, John Paul II, or figures like Walt Disney. The exhibit will also recall the children's sad story, so that similar catastrophes may never take place again.
