Before the meeting, the Pope and president Barroso joked about which language, either Spanish or Portuguese, they should speak. Pope Francis gave a witty reply.
"Let's say that Portuguese is some kind of poorly spoken Spanish!”
During their encounter, which lasted for about 15 minutes, Pope Francis and the President of the European Commission agreed upon the need to promote human rights and religious freedom.
The Pope gave the president a Vatican Museums letter opener. In turn, Durao Barroso presented the Pope with a book about the foundation of the European Union.
