2013-07-24

With an outburst of color,  music and flags, World Youth Days opening ceremony was celebrated in   Copacabana, Rio with a Mass. It was one of the main public events, as the  world awaits the Popes first public WYD appearance.

The Tuesday evening Mass was lead by the Archbishop of Rio, Msgr. Orani João Tempesta. In his homily, he emphasized that the world is looking at Rio, as 'the center of the young and living Church'. In a following statement, those sentiments were echoed by Cardinal Rylko.

CARD. Stanisaw Ryko
President, Pontifical Council for the Laity

"Dear youths! This is the day you've all been waiting for: the start of the 28th World Youth Day. Welcome to Rio de Janeiro, welcome to this extraordinary Brazilian metropolis!"

A little bit of rain didn't stop the celebration and certainly didn't kill the enthusiasm. With thousands of youths from all of the world, they were all encouraged the use this time to fully understand and live out their faith.

CARD. Stanisaw Ryko
President, Pontifical Council for the Laity

"After a long and difficult preparation in your parishes and communities, you are here: this is a young Church, filled with the joy of faith and missionary enthusiasm!"

The Mass was attended by over 500,000 youths. A celebration in true Brazilian-style, the perfect beginning of a very 'musical' WYD.
