Pope Francis visited a Brazilian slum, just outside of Rio de Janeiro. As he was making his way through the citys streets, crowds rushed alongside the popemobile, hoping to greet him.
The slum, which is part of the Community of Varginha and it's known for its limited resources. For decades it was popular for its drug related violence, but most recently, with help of police, its crime rate has been reduced.
The Pope explicitly asked for this slum visit to be added to his trip's agenda. After saying a prayer, he also blessed a parish altar that's still under construction.
