Augustinians to meet in Rome to choose new leader and discuss future plans

2013-08-27

Every six years, the General Chapter of the Order of St. Augustine meets to choose a new prior general, and a general council. They also set the Orders agenda for the upcoming term. For the past twelve years, the man serving as the prior general has been American Robert F. Prevost.

"The mendicant orders traditionally, at least during the past few centuries, have been strongly based on single provinces. And today, in order to respond within a globalized world, we've recognized that we have to work together on the international level. So we have international communities, we have structures that promote dialogue among the provinces that meet much more frequently, and have organized projects that are already underway.”

The Augustinians work in over 50 countries across the world, under the patronage of St. Augustine, a saint whose search for truth can shed light to modern society.

"God is not someone or something that is far way, and Augustine, in his spirituality and in his struggles, in his reflections that we see for example in the Confessions, is able to open a window, if you will, and to lead others to come to discover how God is working in their lives.”

Pope Francis' election, the first Pope belonging to a religious order since the Nineteenth Century, has also inspired the members of the order.

"We as Augustinians, again as a mendicant order, are called to live a simple life at the service of others, and in a special way to reach out to those who are poor in society today, which includes those who are monetarily poor, but there  are many other types of poverty in today's world. Pope Francis, I think, is quite bold in challenging all of us in saying, 'you too need to go out, to reach out, and to be close to others, and to bring that message of Jesus Christ to them.'”

The Pope sent them a message, showing his nearness to them, and assuring them that he will pray for a successful General Chapter. It will begin on August 28, the feast day for St. Augustine.
