Pope explained in Brazil what type of Church the modern society needs

2013-09-01

World youth took center stage during the Popes visit to Brazil. But that was widely expected since he was attending World Youth Day. But Pope Francis did not limit himself to youth, he also met with regional bishops and spoke about what path he would like to lead the Church towards.

POPE FRANCIS

"Do we fight the temptation simply to react to complex problems as they arise? Are we creating a proactive mindset? Do we promote opportunities and possibilities to manifest God's mercy? For me, this is key. I am convinced that this is the moment of God's mercy for its Church.”

The Pope addressed the need for the church to analyze itself from within, and he issued a self-examination with 14 specific questions that all of the bishops must ask themselves. He also reminded them of the importance of interaction with modern society.

"Responding to the existential issues of people today, especially the young, listening to the language they speak, can lead to a fruitful change, which must take place with the help of the Gospel, the Magisterium, and the Church’s Social Doctrine.”

Pope Francis warned about the dangers the Church faces; among them making the Gospel message an ideology, functionalism and clericalism.

He also proposed two "pastoral categories” in helping the Church with its missionary role, nearness and encounter.

POPE FRANCIS

"They do not take into account the "revolution of tenderness” brought by the incarnation of God. There are pastoral plans designed with such a dose of distance that they are incapable of sparking an encounter: an encounter with Jesus Christ, an encounter with our brothers and sisters.”

To make these encounters possible, the Pope urged the Church hierarchy to reject the old, prince-like mentality, and to strive to be shepherds, close to their flock.

Upon his return to Rome, Pope Francis continues to renew the Church's structure. It's expected that many of these themes will be reflected in his decisions.
