But they are televised live; they are talked about in euphemisms and with apparent tolerance, but nothing is done systematically to heal the social wounds or to confront the structures that leave so many brothers and sisters by the wayside”.

"What we encounter in this summer in Rome, very high degrees, it was for about a week or two 38 degrees, high humidity. Of course some of our animals are coming from tropical areas, so they're used to it, and they have no problem with that. But nevertheless, we try to get their life a bit... give them some treats to get their life's easier to get them to cool down.”

That includes shade, light foods, and above all, water. To properly care for animals on the hottest days, their diet consists of very fresh foods. It's why one of the zoo keeper's tastiest treats for animals is frozen fresh fruit. It not only hydrates them, but it also keeps them entertained.

"They love it! I don't know what you saw today, but these treats are always welcome, because from one end, they are cool treats. For the other end, it's some kind of enrichment for these animals. We are trying to enrich their lives in different ways, and give them the food in a way that they have to be busy to get it or to consume it.”

Rome's Zoo is among the oldest in all of Europe. It's located in the city's largest green space, Villa Borghese, a park with over a thousands trees. The Zoo houses over 1200 animals from about 200 different species.
