Pope sends condolences for victims of Turkish cargo jet crash

January 16, 2017. On Monday morning, a Turkish cargo plane has tragically crashed in Kyrgyzstan, killing dozens and hospitalizing many others. Many homes and vehicles in the small village are also destroyed. As a result, Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin has sent a message of condolences to the victims of the disaster on behalf of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis welcomed, for the first time in his pontificate, Maria Voce, the president of the Focolare Movement, and Giancarlo Falleti, co-president of the Catholic movement founded by Italian Chiara Lubich in 1944.   

The Focolare Movement has spread across the world, and has about two million members. Their charism is the promotion of unity amongst all people. They also seek to strengthen ecumenical dialogue, and to help any person who has left but wishes to return to the Catholic faith.
