Pope gets ready to visit Sardinia. Explains island's direct connection to 'Buenos Aires'

2013-09-21

On Sunday, Pope Francis will visit the Italian island of Sardinia. It will be his second apostolic visit in Italy. The first was to Lampedusa back in July.  The Pope will head to Cagliari, which is the islands capital, but most importantly, its the home of Our Lady of Bonaira, a name shared by Argentinas capital of Buenos Aires. In May the Pope explained the strong connection between the two cities.

POPE FRANCIS
May 15, 2013
"When it was time for the city of Buenos Aires to be founded, it's founder wanted to name it 'City of the Most Holy Trinity.' But the sailors who had brought him there were Sardinian and they wanted the city to be called 'City of Our Lady of Bonaria. They argued, but in the end they compromised. So, the city's name turned out to be rather long. They named it the City of the Most Holy Trinity and Port of Our Lady of Bonaria'. Since it was so long, only the last word remained: Bonaria, meaning Buenos Aires, in memory of Our Lady of Bonaria”

Once he reaches the island, Pope Francis will attend five events. His first meeting will be with labor representatives, which will include a worker, trade unionist and a business man. Next the Pope will visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Bonaria where he will greet local authorities and meet with a group of ill people.  At 10,30 he will celebrate Holy Mass followed by the Angelus prayer. Then, he will meet the island's bishops.

At noon, Pope Francis will finish his visit with three meetings: First, with homeless people who receive help from Caritas and with a group of inmates. Second with cultural representatives and lastly with youths from the island of Sardinia. In each one of those gatherings, Pope Francis is planning on giving a speech.
