Pope moved after hearing about families' trials and hardships

2013-10-29

October 28, 2013 (Romereports.com) Speaking to thousands of families out in St. Peter's Square, Pope Francis reiterated the three words all families must say, to live in harmony.

POPE FRANCIS
"Excuse me, thank you and I'm sorry. Shall we say them together? Excuse me, thank you and I'm sorry. Good, let's live out these three words in our family, forgiving one another every day."

This massive gathering was one of the many events organized by the Vatican's 'Year of Faith.' About 150,000 people from more than 70 countries attended. Many families shared some of the trials and hardships they've experienced. As the Pope listened, he was visibly moved.

"We are a Christian family from Syria. We had a quiet life up until armed men surrounded our neighborhood. They killed a friend of our 10 year old daughter and they threatened to take our nephew."

"The Coast Guard came to our rescue and took us to the island of Lampedusa. There were 25 people, laying out on the shore, dead. Among them, my cousin."

After the Pope listened to different testimonies, he explained that God does not forget the pain and suffering every person and every family goes through. He then added that perhaps the biggest challenge, are not the trails of life, but rather lack of love at home.

POPE FRANCIS
"It hurts to not receive a smile and to not be welcomed. Some silence hurts. Sometimes in one's own family, between husband and wife, between parents and children, among siblings. Without love, effort becomes a lot heavier."

Even though the vigil was marked by very emotional testimonies, joy and laughter were also part of the event. With music in the background, there was also time for some light hearted fun. A perfect example is this young boy, who managed to distract the Pope many times.
