Pope Francis visits Vatican Grottoes to pray for deceased Pontiffs

2013-11-05

Pope Francis made his way from his residence at Casa Santa Marta to the Vatican Grottoes, where he prayed for all the Popes who have passed away

Along the way, he prayed, in private, before the tomb of St. Peter. He then visited in the Grottoes chapel, located just underneath the Basilica.

He stopped at the tomb of Benedict XV, Pius XI, Pius XII, Paul VI and John Paul I. Since the Catholic Church celebrates All Saints Day on November 2nd, it has become a tradition for a Pope to pay homage to his predecessors on this day.

Even though it was a solemn visit, there were also some light hearted moments. As the Pope walked through the entrance of the Vatican Grottoes, he said this to one of the altar boys

"Are your hands bound together? It looks like they're stuck."

Towards the end, the Pope also greeted the Swiss Guards, to mark the end of the solemn ceremony.
