The second general counselor of the Legionaries of Christ asks to leave the Order

2013-11-07

One of the general counselors of the Legionaries of Christ, Fr. Deomar De Guedes, has asked to leave the Order. As he explained in a letter, he "no longer has strength to hold his position." "Seeing the example of Pope emeritus Benedict XVI," he says, "I see that the best thing for the Order is that I retire from this process."

The priest made his petition to Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, the Pontifical Delegate for the Legionaries of Christ. He asked for three years off, so that he has time to meditate on his future. De Paolis granted him a year outside the religious order. De Guedes will be received in the Archdiocese of Brasilia.

On January 8th the Order will hold an Extraordinary General Chapter to pass its new constitution and to elect new general counselors.
