Pope prays for victims in the Philippines and for Syrian children who were killed

2013-11-13

The cold weather has made its way to Rome. So, as the Pope blessed children out in St. Peter's Square, he made sure they were kept nice and warm, with gestures like this one.

During his catechesis, the Pope was moved as he prayed for children who were killed in Syria. He also prayed for victims of the deadly typhoon that hit the Philippines

POPE FRANCIS
"With great sorrow, I learned that two days ago, in Damascus, mortar fire killed children who were returning from school. The bus driver was also killed and other children were injured. Please, these tragedies must stop! Let's pray vigorously. These days we're praying with great intensity and joining forces to help our brothers and sisters in the Philippines, who were affected by the typhoon. These are the true battles that one must fight. The fight for life! Never for death!”

The Pope also talked about the Sacrament of Baptism by describing it as a door that leads to faith, God and a Christian life. Once again he reminded Christians that they should know the date when they were Baptized

POPE FRANCIS
"I'll tell you what, today, when you get home, ask yourselves, 'What day was I Baptized? Look into it. It's like your second birthday, because it's the day when you're born in the Church. Will you do this? Consider it your homework. Find out on what date you were Baptized and give thanks to God, because He opened the door to His Church on the day you were Baptized.”

About 45,000 people attended the Pope's general audience. Before concluding, the Pope also prayed for the 24 Italian soldiers who were killed in Nassirya, Iraq ten years ago.
