Pope to Cloistered Nuns: God's will is part of a higher law

2013-11-21

Pope Francis left the Vatican for a few hours to pray the Vespers at the Camaldolese Monastery of Sant’Antonio. His visit on November 21st, marks the so called, Pro Orantibus Day, which is meant to honor 'Those Who Pray.'  The Pope described the Virgin Mary as the 'mother of hope' who filled the tomb of Jesus with light. Reflecting on this example, he asked the nuns a very direct question.

POPE FRANCIS
"The only light in Jesus' tomb was the hope of a mother and at that very moment, Her hope was the hope of all humanity. I ask myself and I ask all of you: Which monasteries have the light of hope on? Are monasteries waiting for 'God's tomorrow'?”

The Pope also explained that Mary understood that the will of God outlines a higher law. He also reflected on Our Lady's unconditional love and trust, describing Her as a role model for all Christians.

POPE FRANCIS
"We owe quite a lot to Our Lady. She is constantly present throughout the history of Salvation. In Her we see a powerful testimony of hope. She is the Mother of a hope that lifts us in moments of darkness.”

After praying the Vespers, the Pope joined the cloistered nuns in Eucharistic Adoration. His visit to the monastery marks the closing days of the 'Year of Faith,' which will officially conclude on Sunday November 24th.
